Overview

Munchkitty is a top-down roguelite about a purple mother cat diving into surreal dream arenas to pull her kittens back from the void. Every run strings together handcrafted rooms, branching dream cards, and escalating pressure that keeps players in a flow of “risky but worth it” decisions.

Core Loop

  1. Breach the room – Arena combat kicks off instantly with melee swipes, chargeable pounces, and a short-range hairball cannon.
  2. Stabilize – Clear waves to calm the distortion level, scoop up catnip, and reclaim a kitten fragment.
  3. Choose a dream card – Pick the next beat (boss, shop, event, or mystery) knowing each option mutates the run.
  4. Upgrade + mutate – Spend catnip on permanent claws, darting dodges, or cursed boons that trade safety for raw power.
  5. Backtrack under stress – After every boss, re-run key rooms with harder spawns and a ticking nightmare timer.

Systems & Highlights

  • Aggressive combat rhythm – Enemies react to combos and punish hesitation; perfect dodges slow time for dramatic finishers.
  • Dream cards as director – Cards remix lighting palettes, add modifiers, or warp the next biome entirely.
  • Black market economy – Shadow vendors sell augments, kitten buffs, or emergency heals using the catnip economy.
  • Run memory – The game remembers how you escaped each biome and throws twisted echoes of those choices back at you later.

Atmosphere

  • Neon-soaked dreamscapes that lean cute at first glance, then reveal glitchy undertones.
  • Bassy lo-fi beats mashed with distant nursery rhymes for a calm-but-haunted feel.
  • Enemy silhouettes reference childhood plushies, but their animations are unnervingly sharp.

Development Notes

  • Vertical slice includes three biomes, six mini-bosses, and a final gauntlet tuned for Steam Deck + desktop.
  • Built entirely in Godot 4 with my custom combat/state-machine library.
  • Current focus: expanding card variety and tightening UX around run summaries.

What’s Next

  • Add long-term meta progression (kitten shelter upgrades).
  • Tape a public Steam demo once UX polish + controller support hit feature parity.
  • Explore cozy difficulty modifiers so younger players can enjoy the narrative without full roguelite intensity.
